Ever since the final ruling on MACRA was released last October, the health care industry has been anxious to see how it will impact all levels of the industry. According to a survey conducted by Kareo, 84% of independent physicians are still unsure of what MACRA will require from their practices over the coming years.
The new payment models are APMs (Alternative Payment Models), the core of MACRA’s new regulations, and MIPs (Merit-based Incentive Payments) for those providers not ready to adopt APMs just yet. With such a large shift from the traditional fee-for-service model, there will certainly be a steep learning curve for the industry. Further, 63% of respondents said that they were unsure if MACRA would decrease reimbursement. Yet a full 85% said that they will participate in the new payment programs as best they could, even with the lack of understanding.
Dan Rodrigues, founder and CEO of Kareo, spoke to the survey’s implications in a statement released today:
Independent practitioners want to stay independent so they want to participate in programs like MACRA and avoid possible penalties. But they need help to do it. The addition of the Pick Your Pace options in the final rule is a step in the right direction.
