A breast cancer survivor from Missouri is using her experience to help others by working as a nurse navigator.
Janie Metsker was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. Following a second bout, she became a nurse navigator for St. Luke’s Goppert Breast Center in Overland Park, Kan., according to a KMBC report.
Metsker hopes she can help other breast cancer patients with their fight — patients like Brandi Torres, who was diagnosed earlier in the year.
“It really helps them to see somebody who’s gone through this. … In order to realize the worth of the anchor, we have to feel the stress of the storm. And that’s what I feel like I’m doing. That woman feels like she’s drowning in the depths of the sea and I’m throwing out a lifeline to [her].”
This story serves as a good reminder that people are patients, too, and it is people that must remain the focus of healthcare.
