This past May, Cigna-HealthSpring partnered with ride sharing service Lyft to provide free transport to and from treatment for many of its Medicare Advantage members.
Elderly patients and those in underserved areas often have to rely on others for transportation to and from appointments, which can be a significant barrier to getting timely, attentive care. The issue of accessibility can also bring significant costs to providers through missed appointment or unmanaged chronic conditions.
The program, which operates in seven states as well as the District of Columbia, provides free transportation for Cigna-HealthSpring members whose Medicare Advantage coverage includes non-emergency medical transport. Rides are available to and from doctor’s appointments, as well as trips to the pharmacy to fill prescriptions.
Since the collaboration began, Lyft has provided more than 14,500 free rides for patients. The program has garnered an impressive 92% satisfaction rate with an average wait time of less than eight minutes.
Cigna-HealthSpring is currently looking into further expansion opportunities based on the Lyft partnership’s success.
