Last week, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology released the final rule of its Health IT Certification Program. The rule increases oversight and transparency in health IT development, as well as allows direct authorization for the review of certified health IT products when risks arise.
Healthcare IT News notes:
Consistent authorization establishes a process for ONC to authorize and oversee accredited testing laboratories, making it easier for ONC to quickly, directly, and precisely address testing and performance issues. The rule also calls for increased transparency and accountability by making surveillance results and performance results of certified health IT publicly available.
The new rule allows the ONC to provide better oversight to aid physicians and providers in keeping up with the rapid pace of technological innovation.
