CMS released its proposed roadmap to a revamped Medicare physician payment system, which will reward providers for quality of care as opposed to how many patients they serve in one day.
The proposed regulation would create two new payments system: a merit-based incentive payment system (MIPS) and advanced alternative payment models (APMs) through the creation of medical homes or accountable care organizations. While both systems would reward doctors for providing coordinated, high-quality care, the risk — and potential for more money — is greater for physicians with APMs.
Said Patrick Conway, chief medical officer at CMS:
By proposing a flexible, rather than a one-size-fits-all program, we are attempting to reflect how doctors and other clinicians deliver care and give them the opportunity to participate in a way that is best for them, their practice and their patients.
