According to a recent KLAS Research survey, only 6% of health care providers believe that current interoperability standards are effective for sharing data with different EMRs.
Bob Cash, vice president of provider relations for KLAS, spoke on the survey’s implications for current EMR providers including athenahealth, Epic and NextGen Healthcare.
This report illustrates the considerable amount of work that still needs to be done in order to achieve impactful record exchange. We learned that challenges related to effective sharing, especially with a different EMR vendor than your own, are experienced across all facility types and across all vendors.
However, the current state of interoperability is not necessarily indicative of the future. Cash says that the survey’s outcomes also reveal vendors’ desire to improve functionality for providers.
The good news? Vendors and providers seem committed to working through challenges identified in the study, and this year’s findings will serve as a baseline for tracking progress in coming years.
